I want to wait until we have more members (then again, maybe we can even use this to our advantage to get more members), but this was one idea I had...
Cliches.
I was just reading through pages upon pages of Ben 10 fanfiction, and there are patterns. Many people are writing the same story, to different levels of competency....some are awful, some are okay, and a few are good.
From what I've noticed, ones for Ben 10 are:
He meets a new plumber kid.
Gwen's pregnant (seriously....why does Gwen get pregnant so often in these fanfics?)
Kevin is jealous.
Gwen is jealous.
Something happens to Julie so now Ben has to find a new girlfriend.
Theories on how Devlin and/or Ken can still exist in canon, taking Alien Force into consideration.
Have you noticed any other cliches? Just post some random ones. I just think it would be kind of neat to have a contest to poke fun at all of this (winner would be decided via poll. So we really can't do this for a while, but at least it puts the idea out there. Heck, maybe it'll even get a visitor to the site to sign up in order to be in the contest).
As far as prizes go...that's going to be a lot more difficult. Any suggestions? Usually winners get things like a fanfic written in their honor or a free art request....ideas?

The last fanfic contest I was in, the prize was a banner to add to your forum signature. It was run off of a message board that no longer exists, but was restarted with new moderators. www.thegoldenfangawards.com/Basically, the banner had the name of the award (or category) and the name of the fic with a design made for the contest itself. I think we'd need to get a few photo-shop skilled people on here for that one, though.

Lol. I love pregnant Gwen. I want to write a fanfic on that! No time, though... I wanted to combine it with making Ken 10 and Devlin canon-worthy!

I can do it to some degree, but it's not one of the things I'm better at. fierysue - well, there's no deadline (for right now), so if you happen to get freetime soon, we'd love to see something from you. I figure if we do the cliche contest, we should split it in two - one award for humor, one award for taking one cliche or more and making a good serious story.

I would have to make time to do that, but I would take as many of the cliches as possible and mix them into one fic.

Personally, I'd probably go with the humor one and try to fit every single cliche I can come up with in there. Although I think humor would probably be the easier one here....
Any other cliche ideas?

Kidnapping is fairly cliche. Especially if it's one of the three main characters.

Ooh, yeah. Seems like it's mainly Gwen (poor girl...all she seems to be good at is getting kidnapped and getting pregnant in high school......or pregnant right after that, but right before Kevin goes back to being evil, so of course he doesn't know that they've got a kid, blah blah blah.....I actually enjoy reading those. Some of them are actually kind of good...some)

Yeaaa~ I've written the Pregnant cliches. Hehehe, yea, I think it sucks personally. >.>
I think Gwevin itself is sort of a cliche. Good girl falling for the bad guy; so I wonder if anyone would write it about that. Like telling people about how cliched their relationship is.
Wow, I just realized that, that idea was cliched too. It seems that almost everyone has taken the time to explain Gwevin in some romantic view or of both Gwen or Kevin themselves.

It seems that almost everyone has taken the time to explain Gwevin in some romantic view or of both Gwen or Kevin themselves. Huh...in a way, I suppose it is. *laughs* Well, if we hold the contest, you could definitely write that. Let's split this up into categories if we can... Cliches for Kevin/Gwen: 1. Gwen pregnant 2. Gwen kidnapped 3. Kevin's turned evil again 4. New girl shows up, makes Gwen jealous. 5. New guy shows up, makes Kevin jealous. 6. Explanation on how Devlin actually exists with Gwen being his mother. 7. Explanation on how Devlin still exists, Kevin was with another woman for a while, but wants Gwen back. Cliches concerning Julie (but not always her pairing): 1. Julie is killed. OC mysteriously shows up at this time to take her place with Ben. 2. Julie is nowhere to be found and not explained....again, OC shows up to take her place with Ben. Cliches concerning Ben/Kevin: 1. Sex. Seriously, why is almost every Ben/Kevin story so full of sex? 2. Explanations on how Devlin and Ken can exist, explaining how Kevin or Ben got pregnant (I've actually found some good ones like this, to be honest. But it crops up a lot) 3. Kevin's gone back to being bad but maintains an obsession with Ben. Cliches concerning Ben/Gwen: Umm...maybe I just haven't read enough of them, but I can't think of any for them just yet. So...suggestions? Cliches concerning nonromantic fiction: 1. Crossovers in action fiction. Specific cliches with Kevin: 1. He's changed back into a monster somehow 2. Can't seem to make up his mind about going back to being bad or being good. 3. Romance stories especially have a habit of giving him a prose that does not belong to him. Kevin would never be thinking "Oh, my lovely angel, if only I could tell you how I feel...". He'd be thinking something like "Man, Gwen's hot." or "If that Dnalien gets spit on my car, I'm going to use his face as a rag..." Specific cliches for Ben: 1. He takes a backseat in the story (maybe not really a cliche, but for a show called Ben 10, he certainly gets pushed out of the limelight a lot) 2. Omnitrix is failing...again. 3. I've seen a lot of writers make him very annoying, even at 15. Doing things like randomly yelling "yaaah!" in a car once. Specific cliches for Gwen: 1. Extremely moody teenager. This puzzles me. Gwen's usually the calm one, and she rarely seems to let her emotions get the better of her. 2. Gwen crying...a lot. Have any of you ever seen Gwen cry? Me neither. She was upset when they thought they lost Grandpa Max, but if she didn't cry then, she's not going to cry over a boy. That's all I can think of for right now....

I don't get WHY people put Gwen as the emotional type. Maybe if Kevin left and she was PREAGNANT at the time I'd probably understand. And an emotionally moody teenage Gwen? That's close to improbible imposible! She's too level-headed for that. Unless it was some IMPOSTER Gwen, than that makes sense.
And that Julie thing, I agree with that too. Benlie seems to be a rare thing to come by in the fanfiction world. I think Kidosta is single handedly filling that space up and trying to get other to help.
Oh great, ANOTHER cliche I've written! Yea, I actuall HAVE writing that explanation on how Gwen could be Devlin's mom. But I find mine lame and shocked that some people like it.
Lol. Those Ben/Kevin getting pregnant stories are hillarious. My brain's still working on how that's possible. But I did read a Gwevin story that had KEVIN pregnant. It was funny. I think it was the first Ben 10 Mpreg story.
Oh, I think I know another cliched one for Ben; "Someone kidnaps the one he loves and he gose to get them." It may be cliched, but I actually like some of them. It's pretty intereting to read.

I agree. I think the only time I could picture Gwen as overly emotional is if she was pregnant. Those mood swings are no joke.

Kevin being pregnant with Gwen's baby was Intergalactic Seahorse. I loved that story, it was so hysterical.
I've got some plot bunnies stirring for a comedy piece. We need more members so we can do this contest...if we don't, I may just go ahead and write it anyways.
cuteinpurple- You're right about people being kidnapped and Ben having to save them. That's a pretty rampant one in fanfiction as well.

Haha, I can see Gwen emotional somehow. I mean, she's strong, but she does have her breaking point. I think if she was disappointed again and again,or was betrayed, she'd be pretty upset, but try not to show it, because she's supposed to be mature. I have to read Intergalactic Seahorse. I have NEVER read that one...

Yeah, definitely check it out. It's really funny. I think invaderhime wrote it, but I'm not positive...
I can see Gwen shedding a few tears at some point....just not out and out bawling. I can see her angry (we've seen that, and she is a redhead...^_-). I just can't see her the type to go "Oh, woe is me, the world is against me, why doesn't Kevin like me" yadayada yada...
