I'm working on a speech about fanfiction for my public speaking class. Would anyone here mind sharing what effect (writting or reading)fanfiction has had on them, or other people?

Umm ok before I start just an FYI talk me with a grain of salt. I got into fan fiction because I wanted to learn to write and that seems to be the place to go to practice with the lowest bar so to speak. I figured if i was bad no one would care. Ive yet to turn out more then a short storys with of original stuff because i get cold feet every time Meh its a hobbie is the best way to put it.

I first discovered fanfiction in 2006 when I was part of the Moonlight fandom. It started off with two multi-chapter fics that I eventually retooled into an original novel. Since then, I've moved into the Ben 10 fandom and started a multi-part series consisting of multi-chapter fics. Writing has always been an outlet for me. It's something that I'm very passionate about and writing fanfiction gives me a chance to enhance my writing skills while being part of a group of like-minded individuals. If you have any other questions or would like something more specific, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be happy to help and I wish you the best of luck in writing your speech.

Thanks guys, this will really help.
DatDude, how long have you been writting fanfiction? Would you say that overall its improved your writting skills?
Lasa, how long after you started writting fanfiction did you begin your novel? Do you have profesional writting experience, or is that your first book? And thanks for wishing me luck. I absolutly despise talking infront of people, I can't stand talking to my own reflection in the mirror! And I'm nervous just thinking about it...

The publish date on my first story on ffn is 3-28-05 and I cant remember if thats a re post or not. Yes it's helped at bit but truth be told i know my grammar stinks and have really stopped caring. I know it a horrible thing to say but im in the to write and maybe get a pat on the back for telling a good story the nuts and bolts of grammar are just boring.

I absolutly despise talking infront of people, I can't stand talking to my own reflection in the mirror! And I'm nervous just thinking about it... To be fair, I had been trying to write a book since I was 14. I have the prologue of that one up on my livejournal. I had been working on it in many different incarnations for the better part of ten years before I started writing fanfiction. It wasn't until after I had written my second Moonlight fic (which was a direct sequel to the first) that I had the idea for a different novel. I haven't been published yet, although the only thing holding me back is the time to sit down and figure out the wording of a query letter so I can try to secure a literary agent to help find a publisher. I've had too much going on at work since I switched to day shift to even think about working on anything related to writing (which sucks because I have several projects and ideas that I need to get written, both fic-wise and with original fiction). I have to disagree with D on the subject of grammar. While plot and character development are the most important parts of the story, a well-written piece should also pay attention to the basic rules of grammar and spelling. Otherwise, it can become difficult to read and the readers may have to read the same sentence several times to understand the meaning. There are many times where the general meaning is clearly discernible, but blatant disregard for grammar is a big turn off for many readers, myself included.

Well, the speech is over and done with and it was only marginally less of a fiasco that what I anticipated...now to wait and see if the teacher agrees with that assesment.
DatDude, listen to what Lasa said about grammar, I agree 100%. It's why the story you sent me is coverd with so many notes. You can have the best story in the world, but if the grammar sucks no one is going to go to the trouble of actually reading it.

I've been busy all week with studying for stuff (PSAT, AP Bio test, history quiz, Latin test, etc), so I'm sorry that I didn't get on soon enough to help you out.
But I'm glad to hear that you got an A!

Ouch. Those are some of my favorite subjects...not really. Although in my bio lab yesterday I extracted the DNA of a strawberry and my own DNA, it's days like that that remind me why I used to love biology.
But it was no problem, I understand (if I didn't slack off, I wouldn't be on here as often as I am!)
