I had a sad moment earlier. I was happy to see one of my old favorite writers for Ben 10 came back with a new story...I went back to read, excited....and read the most out-of-character piece of crap to ever be written with proper English (as opposed to the awful ones that also are riddled with grammar mistakes).
Shocked, I went to check on the previous story the author had written...and discovered that author's stories have always been this way. I have a weakness for romance, of course. Stories about my favorite pairings are often why I hit up ff.net in the first place...
the question I'm posing here is, do you think we're sometimes blinded to how awful a story is because it cast a picture of how the characters we like together could be together? Granted, there are some that are obviously out-of-character the first time you read, but I wonder...do you think we take it easier on the ones that depict our favorite pairings?
I had the same happen not too long ago either...while the original story I went back to wasn't as badly written as this instance, the original story was still slightly out-of-character and overrife with cliches. The second story this author wrote...I had to force myself to finish the first chapter, and I wrote a review I couldn't bring myself to send, asking her where her writing talent had run off to, and if she wouldn't mind tracking it down before she bothered to write anything again.
Has anyone else had this issue? Going back into your list of favorite stories (if you have a list), have you come across one that in retrospect, was really not as good as you once thought?
