So. I'm a musical dork. Walk around in my Hairspray/Wicked t-shirt, singing Avenue Q and wishing I knew the fan dance they choreographed for the movie version of Phantom kind of fan. My most prized possession is a music box of the Phantom and Christine that plays "Music of the Night".
So. This show was more than a little likely to be right up my alley. I loved it. While more than one character you find yourself wishing you could reach into the tv screen and strangle (the main character's wife and her sister in particular), and it does have some adult themes (I'd say don't let anyone watch if they're under 13), but the music is amazing. These kids are just...wow. Rachel has this amazing solo voice (my friend Mikey insists her voice is horrid for the harmonies, though, because it overpowers everyone else. I haven't seen the first episode the whole way through, so I'm not sure just yet).
Not a big fan of when Quinn sang (her back up singers, who were very obviously dubbed over, were much better). Her dancing was good, her voice was just....eh. Kind of a "let her sing the national anthem at a school football game, don't give her a record deal" sort of thing.
Some moments of them singing are done as obvious performances, but sometimes the songs do come into the actual show. For example, when Rachel sings "Take a Bow" (originally by Rihanna. Rachel's version is actually...better), parts of it she's singing on stage, other parts she's singing into school at the guy she likes as he's talking to his girlfriend.
I love it. My mom hated it. It depends on your mindset. Again, I've only come across 2 musicals in my life that I didn't like (High School Musical and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), so you slap music into something, I'm pretty easy to please. My mom felt they could have done more with the show, and some of the characters are so unlikeable she just can't stand it.
Anyone else watch it?
