Quick note: Inspired out of my jealousy that Lasa got to go to the pride parade, and I didn't . Nothing heavy...just a sort of hinting drabble.
“Hurry up or we’re gonna lose him!”
Kevin grumbled under his breath, but said nothing. He merely quickened his pace and followed after Ben, who had turned back into his teenaged body so as not to alarm the crowd they were about to run into.
Not like Darkstar to attack us when Gwen’s not even here… Kevin noted, slowing down as he entered the crowd. No one looked alarmed. He glanced around, his mind carefully trying to figure out what the people were gathered for. 4th of July was the other day…maybe a bunch of people got the wrong day? he thought to himself. He was no longer scanning for Darkstar. For some reason, the mystery of the crowd was much more alluring at the moment.
“Kevin!” Ben had somehow found him the mass of people. The brunette grabbed the raven head and yanked him out into the street. “I lost sight of him…do you know where he went?”
“Nah….Lost him, too.”
“Darn…” Ben muttered. Kevin rolled his eyes, wondering why Ben always had to edit himself. Was it really that bad of a thing to say ‘damn’ for once?
“So, whaddya think this is about?” Kevin asked, gesturing. He noticed now that the crowd was not only on their side of the street - they were also gathered on the other side, many people waving flags. “….flags…guess it is a late 4th of July, then…”
“Um…Kevin. Those aren’t American flags.”
Kevin blinked for a moment. “Okay, fine, so it’s another country’s independence day. Who cares? May as well enjoy the thing. Take a day off.”
“Kevin.”
“What, Tennyson?!”
“Look at the flags. Look very carefully.”
“…It’s a bunch of rainbows.”
“And those mean….?” Ben asked, patiently leading Kevin on. The look of shock and slight horror across Kevin’s face made Ben let out a laugh. “So you got it?”
“Oh, man! Leave it to Tinkerbell to lead us into a gay pride parade…”
“Tinkerbell?”
“Darkstar. C’mon…he flies and he used to have a golden sparkly trail. The guy’s a fairy.”
Ben shrugged, and then shook his head. “Well, I guess we better get out of here, then, huh?”
“Yeah..” Kevin agreed, attempting to make his way through the crowd. No luck. The spectators were packed so tightly that moving mere inches took almost half an hour…it wouldn’t have been so hard had Kevin been alone, but Ben insisted on being polite, and refused to push his way through. Kevin had to keep doubling back for him.
“I think we’re going to be stuck here for the parade,” Ben said, pointing at a group of men who were beginning to walk down the street, loudly chanting the old “we’re here, we’re queer” slogan.
“Oh, man, some of them have their shirts off!” Kevin groaned.
“Raising some questionable feelings, Kevin?” Ben asked cheerfully.
“You wish, Tennyson.”
“You don’t have to be gay to be here!” A girl nearby made both boys jump as she suddenly entered their conversation. “Plenty of people here are just supporters…” she trailed off as the boy beside her turned, looked Kevin and Ben up and down, tapped her on the shoulder and whispered something. Her eyes widened.
“Is something wrong?” Ben asked. She shook her head and held back a giggle.
The boy rolled his eyes. “I’m Brandon…” he said. “I’m seventeen…been coming here for a few years now….” he held his hand out to Kevin. Kevin eyed him suspiciously. Ben, attempting to ease the tension, seized Brandon’s hand and shook.
“I’m Ben. Ben Tennyson. This is Kevin…Kevin E. Levin…”
“Gwen just had to tell you that, didn’t she?” Kevin grumbled.
“Don’t mind him,” Ben said, throwing Kevin a warning glance. “He’s just a jerk. Look, no offense…there’s nothing wrong with your lifestyle or anything…we just…we kind of need to go somewhere. Is there any way we can get through the crowd?”
“Yeah…” Brandon nodded, and jerked a thumb over his shoulder. “If you go that way you’ll find an alley. Duck down it, jump the fence and you’ll be back on Eastern. Do you know how to get home from there?”
“Yep,” Ben said, nodding. “Thanks a lot. C’mon, Kevin…” After he and Kevin were out of their line of site, the girl confronted Brandon.
“You said they were cute. Why didn’t you say something! …do you think they’re straight?”
Brandon shook his head and laughed. “God no…they both set off the gaydar pretty heavily for me. And the taller one was really cute…”
“And yet you didn’t make a move. Explain.”
“Oh, c’mon….isn’t it obvious? I never try to claim another guy’s guy.”
“…You mean they’re….”
“Not yet,” Brandon admitted. “But they will be. When they’re ready.”
